In 1924-1925 Aretsou was founded by the Committee for the Rehabilitation of Refugees (EAP). Of the Aretsian refugees who settled in Thessaloniki, almost all were professionally associated with the sea, while later a variety of professions developed. The streets of Aretsou, at least since 1932, bore the names of people associated with the founding of the settlement and the care of its inhabitants, or other important personalities from the lost homeland. Today it has a marina for tourist boats and an organized coastal zone with restaurants and entertainment shops.
